Background Design Your Own Free Runs
With More than 40M websites under its belt, Weebly is among the world’s hottest web builders out there. Unlike certain competitors, they appear less interested in flashy advertising campaigns than enhancing their platform’s technologies. Design Your Own Free Runs
This all sounds pretty good on paper, right? Well let’s find out how it looks in practice. In this review, we will have a look at their drag and drop editor and see if it’s any good for producing a web site, blog or online shop.
What Is Weebly?
On The broad spectrum of website building solutions, Weebly lives at the end that is all-inclusive and provides everything you need to begin and develop your site. It’s in contrast to solutions where you purchase, set up, and handle all the”bits” of your site individually.
It’s Like trading off a few control for greater convenience.
Utilizing Weebly is sort of like renting and customizing a apartment in a wonderful development rather than getting and owning your own house. You are still in charge of decor, cleaning, and everything living-wise — but you leave the construction, plumbing, security, and infrastructure into the property owner. That point is critical since there’s usually a direct tradeoff between control and convenience.
All The design and functionality that are included with Weebly work seamlessly together as a platform. That’s what lets them own drag and drop design, design, and articles.
As Far as competition, Weebly competes directly with all-inclusive website builders such as Squarespace, Wix, and WordPress.com.
Website Builders as a team compete with choices like WordPress.org (which offers the totally free software to build a site that you have & control — see my own WordPress setup guide here) all the way to options like typing actual HTML code into a text file. Make sense? Awesome, let us dive to the Weebly review.
One Other quick aside — a disclosure — I receive referral fees from all of the companies discussed in this post. My opinions & study are based on my experiences as either a paying client or adviser to a paying customer.
Weebly’s Company Pitch.
What Makes Weebly So Easy to Use?
Good question. First thing you’ll notice Is how well the drag and drop interface was created. Just select the element you need on the left, and set it on your design on the rightside.
You’ll find that components snap into position And organize themselves perfectly on the webpage. Other solutions, such as Wix, forego the grid , so it’s very possible to end up with overlapping components. With Weebly, no risk of that occurring.
Working with text is also a breeze in Weebly. You just click what you want to edit and type your words from the box. Some other solutions use”entrance masks” that are somewhat more subjective and not always easy to utilize.
The navigation system also works miracles. It’s possible to dig deep into menus and submenus. Weebly handles them just like a charm.
Finally, should you get stuck everywhere, the Weebly knowledge base can answer a lot of questions through tutorials that are clear and step-by-step guides. Failing this, the service is excellent, whether via email, chat, or telephone. Design Your Own Free Runs
So are there Any downsides? That is different. If you would like more freedom with your designs, then you may feel frustrated by the rigid grid system. You should go for Wix. This competition also has an automatic solution (Wix ADI) that can build the website for you pretty much by itself. You may possibly shave off a couple of minutes of your site building time.
There are also two things we’d love to see. First is a global undo button. It is possible to undo what you type in text boxes, but it would be nice to erase mistakes once you move or add components. Secondly, Weebly does not have a general media database that keeps all of your pictures. You’ll need to re-upload pictures for every element that needs them.
Which Weebly Pricing Plan is Ideal for Me?
We’d say the primary question to ask yourself is. Do I want to sell online? Quite simply, if you do, we advise that you go for Weebly Business.
For other kinds of websites, Weebly Starter Is usually enough. It provides all you need for displaying info about your services, portfolio or company details. However, the Starter plan overlooks a few Pro features.
· Fancy header with slideshow or movie background.
· Integrated video / audio player
· Password-protected pages
· Membership module — to allow users register and get personal sections of the Site
If any of the Above are must-haves for your website, you will need to upgrade to Weebly Pro. And to get a more comprehensive breakdown, please consult with our full Weebly pricing comparison page.
SEO. How Can My Weebly Website Rank On Google?
Let’s get one thing out of the way first. if You are an advanced SEO specialist who certainly must rank #1 on search engines for a very competitive key word, you might have a difficult time with Weebly. It’s not impossible, but there are limitations.
· Your headings are confined to H2. There is a free program which allows you add key words from h1 to h6, however, it messes a bit with your formatting. We wonder Weebly doesn’t integrate it into their system.
· Particular pages (groups and product pages) add a mandatory string for your URL. You get things like www.yoursite.com/store/p1/my-product/yellow. Not a massive issue unless your website is not in English. Same with the website articles, they’ll have’/site /’ in the URL structure, which can not be changed.
· Adding structured info ( Rich Snippets) is performed via source code. However, you’re in your as Weebly does not help.
On the other hand, Weebly does things actually Well when it comes to.
· URL, Title tags & meta-descriptions. It’s possible to customize them, along as Alt texts for images. This is especially important to rank your own images. Design Your Own Free Runs
· 301 redirects. You can control them to avoid broken links as soon as a page URL has been changed. Google deeply admires 404 pages.
· Picture optimization. Weebly does a fantastic job at controlling the pictures you upload. This improves speed, always a boon for SEO.
Still a bit Curious about SEO? Don’t forget that we’ve got a full guide on the subject here.
Security & Backups. How Safe and Secure is a Weebly Website?
As far as we Know, really safe. The business takes security very seriously. They market strong passwords, and offer SSL encryption on all programs. The free tier will operate on https that delivers an extra layer of security. Especially crucial for onsite personal data exchange (e.g. credit card or email address).
Regrettably, we wish Weebly offered more in the method of backup and restore systems. You’ve got to look after it manually by conserving your site for a .zip file regularly. And there is no restore function if disaster strikes. Wix, for instance, tracks new adjustments and allows you to jump back in time to a previous version of your website.
Weebly Design Options and Templates. Making it Look Good
We’ve Got a Detailed article about Weebly’s templates where you can read the main pros and cons. However, we wish to provide you a quick overview of the main features here.
The First thing to notice is that Weebly does not have a ton of template layouts (approximately 50), but you should easily be able to find one you like. There are different categories out there. Online Store, Business, Portfolio, Personal, Event and Blog.
They mechanically look great on every Apparatus (by being reactive ), and they may be adapted to match your personal needs, using the templates as a foundation. No need for you to receive a web design degree!
Of course, if You’re all about layout, and absolutely need to have the ability to customize it down to the last pixel, you need to have a look at Wix in addition. Their template selection is unmatched and they have a much more flexible editor…
… unless you’re confident with coding. This Is because Weebly, contrary to other builders, gives you access to the template source code.
Want to dig beneath the hood and modify the CSS and HTML? You will have free reign here, as you can see in the picture above.
Ecommerce. Is a Weebly Online Store Worth it?
We’d say yes, with a caveat. It is great to Sell physical and digital products for small and medium-sized shops, but not for huge ones. Although you can use the import and export function to manage large number of things, you might find Weebly lacking in features such as massive stores.
For instance, we don’t like that there Are not any offline payment options (just credit card, PayPal, etc). At $30 CAD a month it’s also rather pricey. Wix’s Online Store is only $20 US for example (but also has less features). Design Your Own Free Runs
Finally, it is worth noting that even though You’re able to create a shop with the Starter and Pro program, updating to Business and higher makes more sense. You are going to find the automatic shipping and sales tax calculator, which is very useful for serious shop owners. Furthermore, you won’t have to pay an additional transaction charge of 3%.
Still confused About the many online store strategies? You can find detailed information in our Weebly Online Shop review.
App shop. Can I Enhance My Site with Add-Ons?
You bet! There are no less than 300 programs in Quite a few classes like eCommerce, Communication, Marketing, Social, or Site Tools. Some are free, some are paid. Some are built by Weebly, some by third party programmers. For the latter, there is always an (unlikely) chance that it might shut down one day. Additionally a pity the apps made by Weebly are rather restricted.
However, one thing all the programs have in Common is a super simple installation feature. Click and bam! All programs are tested and will work instantly on your website. We attempted some cool ones such as a way to add tables, event calendars, and info bars to display special info. Our only qualm is the quality and quantity of programs is a marginally inferior those in the Wix App Store.
Advantages of Utilizing Weebly
Here is What I found to be the pros of Weebly — not just compared with Squarespace and Wix or WordPress, but also as an overall online site solution.
Speed & Security
Weebly provides Hosting for all the websites which are built on their platform. That may be good or awful, but in Weebly’s situation, it’s an expert. They have fast load speeds. Their sites are optimized for their own hosting. They treat safety against hackers and spam. With business plans, they install and keep SSL across your entire website. Here is my speed test.
There Are still speed and security dangers, but overall, it’s an advantage for many website owners to have someone else care for speed, security, backups, etc.. The cost is bundled with expert and completely free accounts, so it’s a solid value-add.
Onboarding & Education
Whenever You start any piece of software — no matter how intuitive — there’s that moment where you think”okay, what do I do today?” That process is known as onboarding, and it is also incredibly hard to execute well.
The Software manufacturer doesn’t want to be annoying, but they also want to provide help. I love how Weebly builds in solid onboarding and education not just via email drip sequence but also via little info buttons built with their platform.

Site Building Process
One Promoted benefit of using a comprehensive site builder is you won’t have to write HTML or CSS code. You can just drag and drop elements. What you find in the builder is exactly what you receive on the website.
It is Not always that easy. There is a lot of nuances to”drag and drop.” The majority of us really mean”I wish to drag and click this element and transfer it to a general place where it’ll look good — you know, mechanically centered, etc.” In other words, it is like playing tee-ball instead of baseball…or bowling with up gutter guards. You wish to do something, but also have a bit of help.
For The most part, Weebly pulls this off. Their drag and drop really works. As well as for the control freaks among us, they supply access to some custom CSS module, so that you can edit the template to exactly your choosing.
For Free accounts, Weebly provides an email service alternative and a well-done Knowledge Base. For paid accounts (even starter), they provide email, chat, AND phone. Response times for me were solid.
With An all-inclusive platform, customer support can troubleshoot and fix any matter. This is a huge advantage of site builder platforms generally, but especially using Weebly since they have telephone support.
If You run your own site, you have to figure out just who will correct a problem before getting in contact with them. Together with Weebly, you merely get in contact with them.
Built-in Feature Set + Extensions
The Big advantage of building your own website on your host is you don’t have to depend on a platform’s feature set. If you go the platform route, it is key to make certain that they have all the features you desire and need.
Weebly’s Feature set is powerful. They have got all the basics — like blog performance, contact forms, etc, but also the necessary advanced features like URL redirects and page-level customized code placement.
Even Past the advanced necessities, Weebly even includes features including forums, subscription choices, integrated advertising options, file uploads, etc.. In addition they have eCommerce options, which I’ll cover individually below.
If You go the all-inclusive site builder route, Weebly’s feature set should provide whatever you will need for typical personal/business sites (though as we’ll see in the Cons section, you do need to be specifically aware of advanced options).
Additionally — Weebly has plenty of built-in attributes, but it doesn’t have everything. Platforms overcome it by allowing 3rd Party programs (believe the App Store or Shopify’s App Store).
Together with your Own WordPress site, adding functionality is as easy as installing a plugin. With Weebly — you can navigate their climbing (though still somewhat limited) app center.
Anyone who retails online
Why? Square is a payments processor. They are huge offline and wish to be larger in the on/offline arena. That’s why they purchased Weebly — and why the future is pretty bright for Weebly’s e commerce features.
If You’re starting a site and plan on selling a couple of things here and there or if you have an offline presence (ie, pop-up shops) and you want to sell online, the Weebly offers a ready-made solution with tightly integrated ecommerce features that should only get better.
Product Investment & Company Structure
I’ve Been using site builders for 20 years since the Homestead.com times and have been closely paying attention to the sector for the past five years. One overarching trend is a company’s structure drives product investment more than the marketing team or the product team.
Even In a fast paced market, a company’s construction and end targets will dictate how it acts and what investments it makes. As I outlined in my Wix vs. Weebly vs. Squarespacestructure can differ wildly among direct competitors.
For Years, Weebly was an independently owned and operated firm going for natural growth. However, in 2018, they sold to Square — the huge player in payments processing. Weebly now operates as an independent subsidiary of Square.
On One hand, that might be a huge drawback. Acquisitions are notorious for destroying companies and value. However, this acquisition has a huge upside for a single market segment —
If You really do not mind your site on a subdomain (ie, http. //yourwebsite.weebly.com) afterward Weeblyis free with no expiry. A pretty good deal — particularly for temporary websites.
Overall Pricing is quite aggressive not only compared to other comprehensive website buildersbut also with purchasing your hosting. Their Starter plan starts approximately $8/mo when paid up front. And they don’t possess the common caps of other site builders. The Pro plan adds sound features and stays under $12/mo.
And Again — you’ll see that everything is accessible and infinite. There are no caps on pages or storage area. And unlike competitions such as Wix, they remove all advertisements with the initial paid grade.
Even Their business pricing, while more costly than doing the exact same thing on your own hosting, is much more affordable than comparable plans with direct rivals.
In comparison To building your own website on your server and notably with other site builders, Weebly’s pricing is very competitive. Price isn’t everything, however I love how they structure it.
Cons + Complaints About Using Weebly
However, Obviously, no Weebly review will be complete without studying the downsides. Each bit of software will have complaints. Let’s look at 3 unique cons I found.
Content Management System
A Content management process is precisely what it sounds like. It’s an interface which permits you to sort, filter, edit, and publish different types of articles on your site. Design Your Own Free Runs
Weebly Sort of has that. It’s a Pages section that lists out all the pages on your site. It permits you to drag and drop the hierarchy and click to edit each. Nevertheless, it’s far from a efficient system.
There is No method to add custom content forms (except inside a single page). If you are planning a massive site (like hundreds of webpages ), the articles contained in Weebly would need a private system to keep it sorted and easily reachable.
This Disadvantage can be overcome, but I wish content could be easily handled within Weebly.
The Last big drawback of Weebly is that moving to a different platform is not difficult. If you want to move someplace else, such as your WordPress powered site, Assessing your content and redirecting your URLs will be a difficult process.
Weebly allows You to export your Page content via zip file but website content is going to have to be manually duplicated and/or migrated via RSS.
Again — migrating platforms will remain hard, but it is something to think about if you are planning on quickly expanding traffic and/or content.
Advanced Advertising Tools
Since Weebly enables for HTML editing, most marketing tools and features can be added to your site. But since you still do not have 100% control on your site & server — it can be difficult and/or impossible to include advanced marketing tools like an EV SSL, custom email collection applications, custom analytics packages, habit social stocks, specific Schemas and A/B testing computer software.
In The jargon — the principal issue is not having”root” or”FTP” access to your server files. This isn’t an unsolvable problem, however it’s something to be careful of if you are arranging a long-term project.
For Most all website owners with average traffic — you’ll want to know about the constraints, particularly if you are planning for rapid growth.
Weebly eCommerce Addendum
Here is Weebly’s ad revealing their new eCommerce setup.
A bonus for Weebly is their eCommerce performance. You can sell products from the Weebly website without changing platforms or performing some distinctive developments. It fits in effortlessly and contains strong performance.
The Pricing is affordable. On lower tiers, Weebly charges transaction fees but bundles the complete eCommerce bundle for company plans.
Ecommerce Is a nice piece of functionality, but keep in mind that it is not a full-fledged eCommerce that online store platforms like Shopify or Bigcommerce have. Weebly has a shopping cart, fundamental inventory management, and payment approval. Here’s how Weebly matches about the eCommerce”spectrum” —
It’s Great for sites that are primarily lead-generation, informational, etc but also want to sell a few products. Additionally, it is a good match for anybody testing out products before going into a long-term stage. It’s not a long-term fit for sites which are eCommerce-first. For those, an online shop you own with WordPress + WooCommerce or even a specialization eCommerce platform like Shopify (inspection ) or Bigcommerce (review) are a much better match.
Product Investment & Company Structure
Now — the purchase from Square does include a downside. That is regular site builder features. Weebly’s incentive would be to invest in features that make it even more valuable as a whole for Square. Design Your Own Free Runs
Features Like appointment scheduling, blogging, etc are only valuable in so far that they gain the parent company.
If You are wanting to build a long-term content or lead generation website, then I would look at WordPress.com (for content) or Wix (for overall drag & drop) rather than Weebly. Even if Weebly meets your needs today, they may not in the medium future.
When we first started testing Weebly many Years past, it was only another website builder. That’s completely changed. Weebly has evolved into an outstanding site building tool which is far better than many competitors. It’s easy, uncluttered and easy to use — that is exactly what people with limited technical abilities need in regards to making their own internet presence.
Of course, it is not 100% perfect. We’d like To see somewhat more templates, as an example. Finding an email address attached to a domain is also a bit pricey, as they urge G Suite, which costs $5 per month, per user. (Though there are workarounds, as you can see in the FAQ below).
But all in all, Weebly reaches the top of our list of website builders. Their ease of use together with cool tools like the iOS or Android app for editing your website on the go, or the amount of add-ons available in the app center makes it powerful, and fun to use.
Enough with the theory. Try it out for Yourself and see how you enjoy it!
